About Pampilhosa da Serra

Pampilhosa da Serra is a municipality in the district of Coimbra, Portugal. The population in 2011 was 9,520, in an area of 230.62 km². It is located in the Serra da Lousã. The present Mayor is António Manuel Pires Nunes, elected by the Unitarian Democratic Coalition. The municipal holiday is June 13. Pampilhosa da Serra was elevated to town status on 8 December 1993. The village of Pampilhosa da Serra lies in a valley in the Serra da Lousã. It has a temperate climate and average temperatures in the summer months of about 27 °C (81 °F), and in the winter of about 3 °C (37 °F). Pampilhosa da Serra is known for its pure air and water. The town is served by a railway station on the Beira Alta Line. The economy of Pampilhosa da Serra is based on agriculture (livestock, cereals, and potatoes), the timber industry, and tourism. The town is home to the Joaquim Aguiar Museum, which has a collection of local artifacts. The Municipal Archaeological Museum was created in 2006 and is housed in the former headquarters of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia (Holy House of Mercy). The Pampilhosa da Serra Nature Park (Parque Natural da Serra da Lousã) is a protected area that covers about a third of the municipality's territory.
